Fun Flute Improvers: a brace of reels: The Mountain Road and The Dunmore Lasses

In the final Fun Flute Improvers class of the term we looked at two well-known Irish reels that complement Greig’s Pipes. The Mountain Road is in the key of D and was written by Sligo fiddler Michael Gorman, while The Dunmore Lasses is in E minor and is traditional.

We looked at a set order of The Dunmore Lasses/ Greig’s Pipes/ The Mountain Road, but the transition between the last two is tricky so I have settled on a different arrangement, with The Mountain Road leading into The Dunmore Lasses and ending on Greig’s Pipes.  Try it and see what you think. There are a few options for playing and ornamenting these tunes and as usual the MP3, ABC and sheet music resources for them can be found on The Flow.

Flute and whistle classes will resume in September, but watch out for news on a refresher workshop in August.
