I design and deliver music workshops for children and adults in Edinburgh, the Lothians and Borders. I also lead CPD training events for Early Years workers, nursery staff and primary school class teachers.
I believe that music is not just a personal experience, but also a social one, whether music-making with others or when performing to an audience. This ethos is reflected in the dynamics of the workshops, which allow for both individual and group exploration and expression.
I teach the P1 classes with the Portobello Music School in addition to running my own community classes and workshops in Edinburgh. I have also worked with the RSAMD in their MusicWorks outreach programme, Fèisean nan Gàidheal, and the Scots Music Group. In my spare time I run The Flow, a popular web site on traditional flute playing.
The Flow Music Workshops is a meeting of all of these experiences.
A traditional musician for 30 years, I have played in many bands and settings and draw on this rich experience in my workshops. I play with Irish dance group Absolutely Legless and with Edinburgh bands Cauldstane Slap and The Big Squeeze Ceilidh Band. A featured artist in East Lothian Arts News, I have also received funding from the Scottish Arts Council that has allowed me to further develop and enhance my workshops.
A former archaeologist and graphic designer, a passion for music led me into teaching. I began to take my music into schools after qualifying as a Primary School teacher in 2008. I also continue to work in schools as a classroom and music teacher.
